Crafting Your Own Minecraft Head: A Cardboard Adventure

Minecraft, with its pixelated landscapes and iconic characters, has captured the hearts of millions of players worldwide. If you’re a Minecraft enthusiast looking for a fun and creative project, why not make your very own Minecraft head out of cardboard? Whether it’s for a costume, decoration, or just a fun DIY project, crafting a cardboard Minecraft head can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the steps to create your very own blocky masterpiece.

Materials You’ll Need

Before you dive into this cardboard crafting adventure, make sure you have the following materials ready:

  1. Cardboard sheets: You’ll need enough cardboard to create the desired size of your Minecraft head. The thickness of the cardboard should be sturdy enough to hold its shape.
  2. Utility knife or scissors: For cutting out the cardboard pieces.
  3. Ruler and pencil: To measure and mark your cardboard accurately.
  4. Acrylic paint and brushes: To paint your Minecraft head and add those iconic pixelated details.
  5. Glue or adhesive tape: To assemble the cardboard pieces together.
  6. Reference images: Find images of the Minecraft head you want to recreate. These will be your guide throughout the project.

Step-by-Step Guide

Choose your Minecraft head:

Decide which Minecraft character or creature you want to recreate. Creeper, Steve, or even a custom design? The choice is yours. For us, it was all about Steve and making that main Minecraft dude for our 6-year-old.

Create a template:

Using your reference images as a guide, sketch out the shapes you’ll need on the cardboard. Remember to include the front, sides, and top of the head. We used a template from Google. We used the most basic version of the design because we didn’t want to have to mix a lot of different colors – We only used blue (for eyes), dark brown (for hair), peach (for skin), and a more yellow-brown (for the beard).

Cut out the cardboard pieces:

Carefully cut out the cardboard shapes using your utility knife or scissors. Be precise, as clean cuts will make assembling the head easier. We made use of the box of a case of beer – perfect for making a costume for your child, right? lol We keep it real here at A to Z Cosplay.

Assemble the pieces:

Using glue or adhesive tape, start assembling the cardboard pieces together. Begin with the sides and front, and then attach the top piece. Make sure everything lines up correctly. For us, we only had to assemble one side of the square and used masking tape to close up the sides and to cover any holes that were left from manufacturing.

Add the details:

Now comes the fun part – painting! Use acrylic paint to bring your Minecraft head to life. Pay close attention to the pixelated details and colors of your chosen character. For this, you can go however detailed or simple as you wish for it. When you see the square shape and the design, you will know who it is. Right? For our box, it was specifically 11x11x11 and our design pattern was 8x8x8 so each grid square was 1.25in x 1.25in.

Let it dry:

Allow your masterpiece to dry thoroughly before moving on to the next steps. Take the opportunity to make the lines as crisp as possible, as it should be with a pixelated design.

Finishing touches:

Once the paint is dry, you can add any extra details. For us, this meant lining up eye holes and making sure that the head would fit on our 6 year old – we added a platform within the head and duct taped a headband inside to allow for the head to move as he would turn his own head.

Display or wear it:

Your Minecraft head is now ready to be proudly displayed in your room or worn as part of a costume. You’ve created a unique piece of Minecraft-inspired art! For us, we paired it with a light blue shirt and bright blue pants…as basic as possible.
